New “reading”

Imagine that a large comet would hit the earth and destroy the existence of the human species in six months. If you find it hard to imagine, there is also a film on the topic (but the script is lousy so I don’t recommend it).

Well, if you knew your life was going to end in six months – would you care what people say or think about you? If you really enjoy that scenario, I believe your answer will be “No!”. Why would you spend the last six months on it? You would go to spend time with people you love and do things you enjoy.

Well, I have a good and bad news. The bad news is that comet is coming. It may not be called a comet, it may have another name, but the subtitle will certainly be “death”. The good news is that you probably have more than six months. By the time you read this, you have probably up to 70-80 years more. And the best news is: instead of worrying about what others think / say, you can spend those years enjoying with loved ones and doing the things you love.

Don’t wait for the comet, start now. Put aside other people’s opinions and live your life. What others say – says a lot, but about them, not about you. What others believe in serves them and their reality.

So, learn to read in a new way. When someone says, “This person is hard to work with,” he doesn’t really say anything about you. He said for himself – that he is tired, impatient or unaccustomed to cooperating with your personality type. When someone says, “This child is wonderful,” he doesn’t say much about the child. But he speaks about himself – he says that he is able to recognize and see the beauty in a human being.

Imagine that instead of feeling like you were hit by a comet when someone in the company commented that you were “non-collegiate”, you actually hear “this colleague has not yet managed to discover the friendly side of my personality”. It takes some time to adjust.

In the beginning, I first heard what people were saying literally, so I had to “translate” in my head to get to the real meaning. After a few weeks of training, things start to happen automatically and then the “new reading” happens on its own. And therefore, your views, feelings and reactions are different.

You might even get angry at a colleague who claims you are unfriendly. But when you have a colleague who has not yet discovered your friendly side, the first instinct is probably to take some time for him and give him a hand of friendship.
